Maybe the avocado isn’t the problem

Hey Reader,

Thursday night, near the end of a long, full week, I cut into an avocado only to discover it wasn’t ripe.

If you're an avocado lover - you get it. It's the worst.

I had a moment.

Brief, but dramatic.

You know the feeling?

A tiny thing goes wrong and you have an outsized reaction.

So many of us judge ourselves in that moment.

Sure, I could’ve beaten myself up for the unnecessary, dramatic - and let’s be honest therapeutic - hurling of each half of the avocado into the woods. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But you know what’s more useful than being a jerk to ourselves in these moments when we clearly are stressed and need a little love?

Curiosity.

Simple, kind questions like:

What is really wrong?

And what do I need right now?

After I took a couple breaths, the answers came easy.

I was tired, overscheduled, and had 3 more days of peopley plans in front of me.

Yes I wanted some guacamole but what I needed was time to decompress in the woods.

An overreaction can lead to a spiral or to a fresh perspective.

For me, it was my flashing sign that I needed some down time. So, I backed out of a social event I had been looking forward to on Friday and went for a hike with Charlie to our favorite quiet swimming hole instead.

Fast forward to Saturday morning as I write this and I feel like an entirely new human.

So next time you toss your metaphorical (or literal) avocado into the woods, pause, skip the part where you beat yourself up, and get curious instead. Ask the simple questions. Then go find your version of a quiet swimming hole.

XO,

Missy

Hey Reader, Humans are nuts. We break barriers, surprise ourselves, and reinvent what is possible all the time. Every once in a while, someone does something that reminds the rest of us that our limits are often much farther away than we think. This weekend the world record for the mile was broken in London by Josh Kerr. If you want to see the crazy incredible feat, here is a link to the video. It will take less than 4 minutes to watch the actual race. 3:42.66 to be exact. As a runner it's...

Hey Reader, I learned a new word last week, courtesy of the brilliant Brene Brown. You're going to want to know it too! Confabulation. Confabulation: A lie, honestly told. It's fascinating. I've been thinking and talking about this concept for years, focused on the lies we tell ourselves that we believe without question. I've never had a word for it until this week. And now that I can name it, I see how often we confabulate. It's even more than I suspected! Here are two examples from my life...

Hey Reader, An idea to try on this week... Trying to think positive is getting in your way of thinking and acting powerfully. So often my clients tell me what's going on with them and then say some version of, "I know... I should think positive." And I typically disagree. Usually when someone says that, they are trying to put a positive spin on something they don't feel good about. I bet you can relate it. It's fighting reality rather than trying to get powerful within it. There is no shame...
